Members of our Scienfic Advisory Board engage with foster+freeman executives to highlight topics that need attention and discussion from an industry/customer perspective, including legislative or regulatory changes and newly emerging technologies.
The SFAB provide expert input on specific projects and activities, and give our organisation new insights and advice to help us solve relevant problems and explore new opportunities by stimulating robust, high-quality conversations.

Dr Stephen Bleay
Dr Stephen Bleay is a senior lecturer in the School of Applied Sciences at London South Bank University (LSBU). He holds a PhD in Materials Science and has over 20 years of experience in forensic science, particularly in the areas of fingermark enhancement and imaging at the UK Home Office. Dr Bleay has worked extensively with law enforcement agencies and has been involved in the writing of the internationally renowned Fingermark Visualisation Manual. His research interests include the development of new forensic techniques and the study of the effects of the environment on fingermarks and materials. Dr Bleay is also committed to educating the next generation of forensic scientists and has developed and taught a range of forensic modules at LSBU.
Jo Ashworth OBE
Jo Ashworth OBE has extensive experience in the fields of Forensics, Criminal Justice, and Law Enforcement. With a career spanning over 30 years, she has made significant contributions to the development and implementation of forensic science policies and strategies, as well as improving the criminal justice system in the UK. Jo has worked in a range of organizations, including the Forensic Science Service, National Policing Improvement Agency and several police forces. She has delivered significant national and regional programmes of work, during which she has worked closely with the Home Office, National Police Chiefs’ Council, and the College of Policing. She has also served as a Chief Executive of the Forensic Capability Network and was awarded an OBE in 2015 for her outstanding services to forensic science. Jo is known for her innovative and forward-thinking approach, and her expertise continues to be sought after by leading organizations in her field.
Dr Robert (Bob) Green OBE, JP
Dr Robert (Bob) Green is an esteemed academic and expert in the field of Forensic Science, currently serving as a Reader and Director of Student Engagement at the University of Kent’s School of Chemistry and Forensic Science. With over 20 years of experience in teaching and research, Bob has made significant contributions to the development and dissemination of forensic science knowledge, particularly in the areas of DNA analysis and crime scene investigation. He has authored numerous publications in prestigious scientific journals and has been invited to speak at international conferences and workshops. Bob is also known for his innovative and engaging teaching methods, which have earned him several awards and recognitions for his contributions to education. His expertise and leadership in the field of forensic science continue to inspire and educate the next generation of forensic scientists.
For his services to forensic science he was awarded an OBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list of 2008.
Gerald LaPorte
Gerald (Gerry) LaPorte is a highly accomplished forensic science professional and Director of Research Innovation of the Global Forensic and Justice Center, a pre-eminent program at Florida International University (FIU). With over 30 years of experience in the field, Gerry has made significant contributions to forensic science research, policy, and practice. He has held leadership roles in various organizations, including the Director of the Office of Investigative and Forensic Sciences at the National Institute of Justice and was the Chief Forensic Chemist at the U.S. Secret Service. He was the co-chair of the Standards Practices and Protocols Interagency Working Group, under the Office of Science and Technology Policy within the Executive Office of the President of the United States and he was selected by the Attorney General of the United States to serve as a Commissioner on the National Commission on Forensic Science. He has authored numerous publications, including chapters in four forensic science text books, and has testified as an expert witness in International and U.S. Courts over 125 times. Gerry’s expertise and vision have positioned him as a driving force behind the advancement of forensic science, and his leadership at the Global Forensic and Justice Center continues to shape the future of forensic science research and education.
Dr Herve Menard
Hervé Ménard is a highly accomplished academic and researcher, currently serving as the 2nd Principal Investigator at the University of Dundee. He has made significant contributions to the fields of biophysics and biochemistry, particularly in the area of protein structure and function. Hervé has authored numerous publications in prestigious scientific journals, and his research has been recognized with awards and fellowships. He has also served as a lecturer and mentor to undergraduate and postgraduate students, and has been involved in various scientific collaborations and initiatives. Hervé’s expertise and leadership in the field have positioned him as a valuable member of the academic community, and his contributions continue to advance our understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying biological processes.
