Crime-lite CSI

Detect Every Last Trace of Evidence

Forensic or Alternate light sources (ALS) are widely used by investigators for the detection and examination of evidence at the crime scene.

While white (visible) light sources are used for the general search of a scene, examiners must utilise the full forensic spectrum (using narrowband illumination from the UV through to the Infrared) if they are to reveal every possible trace of evidence.

Many materials and substances of evidential value possess a property called fluorescence. Fluorescence occurs when light of one wavelength strikes an object, and the object returns light of a different higher wavelength (this is known as the Stokes shift). Because the returning light (fluorescence) is much weaker in intensity than the original light beam, examiners must use filters to allow the fluorescence to pass but block all other unwanted wavelengths of light. Such filters are available as evidence viewing goggles and as camera lens filters. The Crime-lite AUTO integrates both the light source and filtration with a live image of any fluorescence displayed on screen.

Fluorescence examinations may reveal evidence including:

  • Body fluids (semen, saliva, urine etc.) are revealed using UV, Violet, or Blue illumination.
  • Illicit drugs / Narcotics revealed using UV or Violet illumination.
  • Suspect fibres fluorescence under a range of wavelengths across the spectrum.
  • Chemically treated fingermarks. Many fingerprint treatments are designed to fluoresce under narrowband illumination to increase print visibility/contrast on a wide variety of surfaces.

While a skilled investigator can learn a great deal through the visible examination of a crime scene, a great deal of evidence may remain unseen, hidden, or masked by the background.

Crime-lite UV and IR light sources (all models) enable the examiner to search beyond the limits of human vision – in order to detect the presence of blood and other body fluids and to reveal fingerprints while significantly suppressing backgrounds.
While the search is typically invisible to the naked eye, examiners are able to reveal evidence via a specialist camera such as the Crime-lite AUTO or Crime-lite CAM.

Beyond visible examinations may reveal evidence including:

  • Blood stains and spatter (even on dark substrates) using infrared examination
  • Gunshot residues, using infrared examination
  • Fingerprint treatments including cyanoacrylate, which can be photographed very effectively using reflected-UV imaging.
