GROUND TRUTH STUDY
BODY FLUID DETECTION
What is the PVL? VERIFIED BY SCIENCE:
Product Development Driven by Ground Breaking Forensic Research
Demonstrating foster+freeman’s ongoing commitment to product testing and scientific rigor, our Ground Truth Studies are the culmination of a 2½ year investigation into the use of high intensity illumination, in combination with narrowband optical filters, to detect and reveal body fluids on fabric.

Existing Crime-lite AUTO users can log-in to gain access to a searchable library of more than 18,000 images of body fluids on a wide variety of fabrics, captured using the Crime-lite AUTO under multiple imaging conditions from UV, through the visible spectrum, to IR.
Background I BACKGROUND: how does the pvl database benefit forensic examiners and researchers? For CSIs and Forensic Examiners... Presumptive tests are necessary for all body fluid identification prior to DNA analysis. This takes time, costs money, and often involves wetting & drying of the evidence leading to a loss of detail of stain pattern and potential loss of DNA. In 2020/21, 242,117 new subject profile records were added to the National DNA Database.

By understanding how body fluids and fabrics interact with high-intensity illumination we can improve our ability to detect this invaluable source of evidence at the crime scene and during laboratory examinations of evidence.
For Researchers and Academics... Research and the exploration of new ideas plays a critical role in developing new methods and techniques that can help investigators to collect, analyse, and interpret criminal evidence.
BACKGROUND Why can we detect valuable evidence on one garment but not another? The myriad of dyes, pigments, material types and surface coatings used during manufacture, all play a significant role in the ability to visualise the forensic trace of interest. If an examiners role is to detect and examine all evidence of value, it is important to consider how we can maximise our evidence recovery potential by understanding the optical interactions between body fluid and substrate.

In-situ examination of evidence can save time, money and resources. In-situ multi-spectral photography of evidence can detect valuable traces of DNA. Knowing exactly what to look for, and using pre-set search tools (founded on ground truth data) will benefit any crime scene investigator.

Forensic light sources remain a trusted tool for CSI & laboratory practitioners. Their use enables contrast to be achieved between the forensic trace and the substrate on which it resides. Examiners use high-intensity illumination to reveal traces of evidence including semen, saliva, sweat, urine etc. But, while much is known about the optical properties of the trace, the substrate upon which we are searching is often overlooked.
Slide BENEFITS & APPLICATIONS Forensic Ground Truth Data QUANTIFIABLE DATA TO ASSIST WITH PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT AND EXTERNAL RESEARCH PROJECTS Ground Truth Data is information that is known to be real or true, provided by direct observation and measurement as opposed to information provided by inference. This empirical evidence facilitates the representative comparison between Ground Truth Data and real-world subject matter, in a scientifically robust and verifiable manner Detect More Evidence using technology Designed by foster+freeman, Verified by science Following a recent software update, every Crime-lite AUTO handheld imaging device will include integrated pre-sets generated by the Ground Truth Library – Body Fluid Detection data which (when using the pre-set examination mode) enables the simple, efficient, and effective use of Crime-lite AUTO for the search, detection, and imaging of bodily fluids at the crime scene and in the laboratory. Research & Training Open Access to the wider forensic community We believe this data will be of use to anyone seeking to learn more about the detection and visualisation of DNA-yielding body fluids and for the development of advanced search and detection technologies and techniques. contact Find out more about what
